Nonna’s Cucina offers authentic Italian food made from scratch that uses as many locally sourced and organic ingredients as possible. We offer both vegan and gluten free menu options. “Many of the recipes are from over three generations of my family; my Italian grandmother taught me our famous meatball recipe”. – Ashley Dolinar – Chef and Owner.

Well here we are out and about thrifting for books again and needing a bite to eat in Redmond, and after a successful trip to That Guy’s Bistro at General Duffy’s Watering Hole, we’re back with a new truck! Nonna’s Cucina!

The Truck

After looking at the menu we instantly keyed in on splitting the Chicken 🐓 Pesto Sandwich 🥪 & fries.

The menu
Chicken 🐓 Pesto Sandwich 🥪

Lunch: Chicken 🐓 Pesto Sandwich 🥪$16-Popular sandwich with chicken 🐓 , house-made pesto, fontina cheese 🧀 , fresh basil 🌿, fresh tomato 🍅 , and balsamic glaze on a Pandura roll 🥖 from the Village Baker. Served with your choice of fries 🍟, garlic fries 🧄 🍟, or a side salad 🥗.

Chicken 🐓 Pesto Sandwich 🥪 & garlic fries 🧄 🍟

We went with the garlic fries on their recommendation & I have to say, this sandwich was delicious & the fries were crispy & flavorful. The bread, like at Sunriver Brewing Co, was hard, but it worked well with the wet textures of the sandwich and sauce, it had a crunch to it, not chewy like Sunriver Brewing Co.. The cheese melted nicely keeping things mostly intact, and the balsamic glaze was an absolute game changer to my taste buds.

The garlic fries weren’t too over powering and packed with flavor and crisp, a nice side to the soft sandwich filling. You really get a good sized meal to share, as you can see we couldn’t finish, but that’s not a reflection on the quality of food, more so on the amount of coffee & beer we had prior & during. $16 is a little on the steep end for a one person meal, but if everything comes in this size a portion, a split meal comes at a nice price of $8 per person.

We are inside General Duffy’s Watering Hole & grabbed a beverage, I opted for another light Pilsner, the Ninkasi Pilsner. I can’t say this was a good pairing with the sandwich and fries, the tart crispness didn’t pair well, afterthoughts would lead me to go with a dark beer to pair here. You can see my full beer review on Untappd.

Ninkasi Pilsner

So the verdict is, grab a friend, split a meal and get a beer and enjoy another great offering at General Duffy’s Watering Hole, a great place to kill time in a layover at RDM.

Been awhile but I’m still here!

I know it’s been awhile since I’ve made a regular old blog post, but I’ve been busy. We got a replacement vehicle for Fjord, we now have Duke in our line up. I’ve been out sourcing books for our FBA business which we now have over 1500 books in our store. Since it’s the slow season for Turo, I’ve picked back up driving for Lyft throughout the day (guess where I am right now lol… ✈️) and we’ve just generally been busy preparing for Winter & wrapping up Summer.

Thanks for stopping by, and look forward to weekly food reviews which I have scheduled to come out weekly on Thursdays (love technology & the ability to schedule posts) and look forward to some more consistent communication going forward.

That Guy’s Bistro at General Duffy’s Watering Hole

The Truck

Wow what an experience with That Guy! Friendly smiling faces right off the bat ready to give you a great dining experience. I was impressed, then I saw their ordering sign and it all made sense.

The menu

I went with the Basil Chicken Filly ($13) a marinated and grilled chicken with melted provolone, pistachio basil pesto, and spring mix lettuce with a balsamic glaze drizzle. It also had 2 slices of tomato that were not featured on the menu.

A gracious portion of food to begin with filled me right up. The flavors blended and complemented well, the only issue was there was slightly too much food for the pita to hold it’s structural integrity, but if that is your main issue, I think you’re doing just fine.

The only downside is you can not get drinks at the food carts, you’ll need to go into Duffy’s Watering Hole to quench your thirst. I was greeted by smiling faces and friendly service, so if you are looking to kill time before or after a flight at RDM, this is a close location that will treat you well!

I went with a Pelican Kiwanda Cream Ale ($6) and let me tell you this is a superior cream ale and hit the spot on a nice sunny Central Oregon day.

Overall a Rexamendation for the combo of That Guy’s Bistro & General Duffy’s Watering Hole!

Iced Cherries Jubilee

Well, this wasn’t the scheduled stop today, Joe Mama’s was on tap, had a giant white open sign on their building, a flashing open sign in the window, and no one in sight. Wah wah wah…

So I pressed on to the airport and pulled up yelp to fin another coffee shop on my way I knew was on Empire, but I guess I dreamt that shop last night in my sleep.

I knew Java Jungle was the last stand North towards Redmond, so I had my out to check them off the list, and I’m glad I did.

I’ll get to the coffee in a minute, I want to address the shop itself, it’s not easy to get to, they have a second location that coincidentally is the last coffee stand South you can get in Bend, that’s good real estate there. The Barista’s were kind of lack luster, one said it was her last day and it took a bit for them to come to the window.

Coffee: 24oz Ice’s Espresso with Cherries Jubilee and Heavy Whipped Cream ($6.25) is what came out of my mouth. I thought it was smooth. It wasn’t. She was like, what? Cherries Julie’s? 🤦🏻‍♂️ I said it again, fail, said it a last time and we were on the same page.

HOW DO YOU ORDER COFFEE LIKE A NORMAL PERSON??????

Ok, flavor profile is amazing Cherries Jubilee consists of White Chocolate, Amaretto, and Cherry flavoring. After the first sip I was presently surprised at the combo, a little heavy on the cherry, but still good. And then it hit me. Coffee. I tasted coffee with my flavoring! Yes! Good coffee!

Final word. Give them a try you’ll enjoy it. Totally climbing up the list on the great 8.

Rest of post will be update when on a computer.

Raspberry and Heavy Whipped Cream Iced Coffee

Looking for your Airport Fix? Redmond Coffee Company has you covered. I was on my way to the airport to start ride sharing after gassing up and decided I’d driven past this coffee spot enough and today was the day. Today, was also the same day, my barista started her coffee making career. Needless to say, again like the Human Bean, getting coffee was a struggle. I tried to replicate the success of The Dolly Parton, but alas, as you can tell by the nuclear pink color that this monstrosity turned out, I was unsuccessful. But it defiantly had attitude! The new barista asked me if the drink I was ordering had coffee in it, after pondering what a drink full of cream, flavoring, and whipped topping on ice would actually taste like, I informed her that indeed I was looking for espresso in my drink. The other barista looked to take charge, but I’m not sure it was successful.

Again though, I’m not a coffee connoisseur, I confess, maybe I don’t know how to order a coffee I’m looking for, I mean, I can’t say I started drinking coffee until I was like 30, so I will be giving RCC another try.

Coffee: Coffee (Espresso?, Cold Brew? Who knows?) Heavy Whip Cream (Possibly) Raspberry Flavoring ($5)

Well, needless to say I couldn’t taste any coffee in this drink.
